Rate of Flow & Fire Suppression Thermodynamics
Suppression requires applying water at a rate that absorbs British Thermal Units (BTUs) faster than the chemical combustion reaction generates them. One gallon of water absorbs approximately 9,340 BTUs when converted entirely to steam at 212ยฐF.
NFA vs. Iowa Formula Comparison
- NFA Formula: (Length ร Width รท 3) ร Stories ร % Involved. Designed for rapid size-up by initial arriving engine officers. Add 25% of the base flow for each threatened exposure.
- Iowa State Formula: Total Volume (L ร W ร H) รท 100. Best applied to sealed commercial spaces where steam expansion (1:1700 expansion ratio) can smother interior fire gases.
